“Nothing behind me, everything ahead of me, as is ever so on the road;” Jack Kerouac documented those poignant words in his 1957 novel, On the Road, and they have since served as an anthem to countless generations. With the call of summer fast approaching, the adventure-seekers that had been hibernating all winter are beginning to stir, as the open road beckons. The bags and the wide-brimmed woven hats that had been stashed in the closet are suddenly seeming tempting as ever and it seems as if the wind is whispering your name. You’ve got a bad case of summer wanderlust and the only cure is to heed the call and embark on a road trip.

Though hours in the car and endless possibilities for whatever awaits usually require comfortable clothes, that definitely does not mean skimping on style. The best way to pack for a wherever-the-day-takes-you kind of trip is to balance style with comfort. Sticking to a neutral color palette will allow you to mix-and-match with ease and keep dressing chic and effortless – think cut-off shorts and retro off-the-shoulder tops.

Stow away a couple of cardigans and jeans for when you serendipitously stumble upon a camp site and make impromptu s’mores with your friends. Low-maintenance beauty staples such as dry shampoo and chic sunglasses will keep you camera-ready and only slightly windblown – the mark of a fantastic trip.
